该剧反映了南开大学毕业生到西部支教的故事。电影以我国西部大开发10年为背景，讲述了甘肃天水籍学生秦聪聪被南开大学录取，因家庭经济困难，在乡亲们和全国支教模范白方礼的帮助下完成学业，毕业后为了感恩社会、回报家乡，放弃高薪职业回到家乡做乡村小学教师的故事。 该片制片人兼导演李佳伦说，女主人公秦聪聪是剧组采访多位南开学生后创作出的人物。片中男一号的身份也被设定为南开大学学生。该片由影视明星李琦、胡静怡、向日葵、韩会亮、战立国、胡珂瑜等主演。剧中表现抢眼的小演员均为天水当地的小学生。
